Day 7 - Agapē: The Love That Perfects Unity

Grace and peace to you from the God whose very nature is love.

As we journey through Scripture's vision for oneness, we arrive at the heart of it all: ἀγάπη (agapē), pronounced ah-GAH-pay, the Greek word for unconditional, self-giving, divine love. This is not sentimental affection or mere feeling, but a deliberate choice to seek the highest good of another, modeled perfectly by God Himself. This word means so much to me personally, as ἀγάπη was discussed often in my younger years during youth group meetings, where we were encouraged to pursue this selfless, Christ-like love as the highest goal for every believer. This word appears appears 116 times in the New Testament, across 106 verses!

In Colossians 3:14, Paul writes:

“And above all these put on love (ἀγάπη), which binds everything together in perfect harmony.”

Here, ἀγάπη is the "perfect bond" that completes and holds unity in place—surpassing all other virtues. In 1 Corinthians 13:4–7, Paul describes its active character: patient, kind, not envious or boastful, not arrogant or rude, not insisting on its own way, bearing all things, believing all things, hoping all things, enduring all things. This love "never ends" (v. 8) and is the greatest of faith, hope, and love itself (v. 13).

In Ephesians 4:2, believers are called to "bearing with one another in love (ἀγάπη)," and in John 17:23, Jesus prays that the Father's love for Him would be in us, perfecting our oneness so the world knows the truth of the gospel.

ἀγάπη is the love poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5), enabling us to love across traditions, forgive past wounds, and prioritize Christ over secondary differences. When Catholic and Reformed believers alike clothe themselves in this divine love, divisions lose their power, and the Church shines as one body.

Today, let ἀγάπη guide one interaction: choose patience over frustration, kindness over judgment, endurance over withdrawal. As we love as Christ loves, our unity grows stronger and our witness clearer.

Prayer: God, who is ἀγάπη, fill us with Your perfect love. Teach us to bear with one another, forgive freely, and bind Your people together in harmony. May this love perfect our oneness, that the world may see You in us. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
