Day 2 - Preserving the Henotēs: Unity as a Gift to Guard

Grace and peace in the name of our one Lord Jesus Christ.
Yesterday we reflected on Jesus' prayer in John 17, where He asked that all believers might be ἕν (hen)—one—in the same profound way that the Father and Son are one. Today, the apostle Paul echoes and applies this vision in practical terms for the Church.
In Ephesians 4:3, Paul writes:
“eager to maintain the ἑνότης (henotēs) of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
ἑνότης (pronounced heh-NO-tace) is a rare and beautiful Greek word appearing only here and in Ephesians 4:13 in the entire New Testament. It conveys not just agreement, but a deep, wholeness-producing unity that the Holy Spirit creates among believers. This oneness is already a reality for those in Christ—yet Paul urges us to be diligent in preserving it, like guarding a precious treasure entrusted to us.
The "bond of peace" is the glue: humility, gentleness, patience, and love (vv. 2–3) that hold the diverse body together. When we allow quarrels, pride, or unnecessary divisions to erode this bond, we grieve the Spirit and weaken our collective witness.
The call is clear: Unity is not something we manufacture through compromise, but something we protect through Christ-like character and obedience to truth. As members of one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God (Ephesians 4:4–6), let us commit today to actions that strengthen rather than strain the ἑνότης we share.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, who creates ἑνότης among Your people, stir in us eagerness to maintain it. Grant humility and love that bind us in peace, so our oneness may glorify Christ and draw the world to Him. Amen.
